Northeast Jan-1 has ended!

The Northeast Jan-1 2018 trip has come to an end. The 52 exchange students are already on their way back to their host cities. The experience was amazing and it'll be remembered forever. Although it's sad to say goodbye, we are very happy with the success of this trip. Thanks to everyone who made it possible, from exchange students and their families, to rotarians, exchange officers and district chairmen, as well as coordinators and Terra Brasil! See you!

24º dia - Angra dos Reis / São Paulo (28/01/2018)

Hoje, nós acordamos 7h30, tomamos café da manhã e fomos pro barco começar o passeio em Angra dos Reis. A maioria de nós começou o dia dormindo no barco, porque estávamos cansados da festa de ontem. Apesar de estar um pouco nublado, a paisagem era muito bonita, com muitas montanhas e uma água muito limpa. Fizemos a primeira parada e algumas pessoas desceram para nadar. Depois de alguns minutos, todos voltaram pro barco e seguimos o passeio. Na segunda parada, quase todos desceram pra aproveitar a última praia da viagem. Algumas pessoas foram nadar, outras ficaram na areia tomando sol e procurando conchinhas. Voltamos para o barco e seguimos para a última parada, em um pier, onde almoçamos e depois fomos direto para o ônibus para seguir viagem até São Paulo. Depois de 8h de viagem, chegamos em São Paulo, fomos pro hotel, jantamos e tivemos a última reunião. Em seguida, ficamos aproveitando as últimas horas para nos despedirmos, porque amanhã levantamos cedo para ir pra casa.

Today we woke up at 7:30am, had breakfast and went to the boat to start our ride around Angra dos Reis. Most of us started the day sleeping on the boat, because we were still tired from yesterday's party. Even though it was a little cloudy, the view was beautiful, with a lot of mountains and a very clear water. We made our first stop and some people went swimming. After a few minutes, everyone went back to the boat so we could continue our ride. On the second stop, almost everyone got off the boat to enjoy the last beach of the trip. Some people went swimming and other people stayed on the sand laying under the sun or looking for shells. We went back to the boat and continued our ride to our last stop, at a pier, where we had lunch and then went right back to the bus to continue our trip to São Paulo. After 8 hours, we arrived in São Paulo, went to the hotel, had dinner and our last meeting. Then we used the last hours to sign flags and say goodbye, because we leave very early tomorrow to go home.

 

23º dia - Rio de Janeiro / Angra dos Reis (27/01/2018)

After waking up and making breakfast on our last day in Rio, we headed to Copacabana beach. The beach was so beautiful, we hung out there for a couple hours and then everyone either got lunch in the city or made something in their apartments. After we ate and we’re all ready to go to Angra dos Reis, we had a little problem - someone sill hadn’t come back from the beach. We all split up in groups to go find him but he just ended up returning to the hotel in a taxi. We finally started our drive to Angra after that. Once we arrived, we had time to relax at the beautiful hotel. The hotel was in the mountains and on the water. It was actually kind of cold there though. At night we had dinner and then our goodbye party. It was said knowing the trip had basically ended at that point but we all had a fun time.

Depois de acordar e fazer café da manhã na nossa última dia em Rio de Janeiro, nos fomos na praia de Copacabana. A praia lá e muito lindo, ficamos lá umas duas horas e depois tinha opção de sair por almoçar ou fazer no apartamento. Depois de comer, a gente tava pronto por ir a Angra dos Reis, mas tinha uma problema - uma pessoa ainda não voltou da praia. Nos ficamos em grupos pequenos por lhe-procurar mas depois duas horas ele voltou no hotel em táxi. Finalmente a gente começou a viagem até Angra dos Reis. Quando chegamos lá, relaxamos no hotel, lá tinha um quintal gostoso no mar. Estava um pouco frio la. Nos jantamos e depois tínhamos uma festa de despedida da viagem. Foi triste de saber que terminou, mas acho que tudo mundo tinha um ótimo viagem.

22º dia - Rio de Janeiro (26/01/2018)

All of the exchange students woke up early to make their own breakfasts before we all left for the first stop of the day. Lapa was our first stop. After that we walked to the Stairs of Selarón. Soon after we arrived it started raining. Some of the exchange students continued to take pictures in the rain while others took shelter at a nearby restaurant. Unfortunately it was raining on and off all day so we had a little bit of a delay because of the weather but we continued with our trip. After lunch we all got on a train to head up to Cristo Corcovado. When we arrived at the top the Christ was nearly invisible. The head was completely impossible to see at first because of the low clouds. At times the face of Christ Redeemer was visible for only a few seconds when the clouds parted. The exchangers were sure to take quick photos when they got the chance. We spent 2-3 hours at the top hoping that the clouds would clear. The weather never cleared and we eventually all went down to get back on our bus to head to dinner. For the last event of the night we went to a market on Copacabana beach where we bought lots of souvenirs from Rio. Even though the weather was not the best, we took the best of it and enjoyed all together specially when The Cristo Corcovado showed his face

Todos os intercambistas acordarom bem cedo para fazer o seu proprio cafe da manhã, antes de ter que dejar o hotel para nossa primera parada do dia.

Lapa foi o nosso primeiro lugar. Depois a gente caminho até as escadas de selaron.  Quando nos chegamos alí, comenzou a chover muito. Algumas pessoas ficarom tirando fotos, outras forem correndo buscar um lugar para não ficar molhados. Tristemente ficou chovendo o dia todo e tivemos um pouquinho de atraso mas nos continuamos com nossa viajem. Depois do almoço pegamos um trem para até o Cristo Corcovado. Quando chegamos lá, o Cristo quase nem estava podendo se ver. A cabeça dele não apareceu no início pelas nubes que estavam muito baixas. A gente ficou lá umas três horas e quando as nubes se apartavam um pouco da cara do cristo, nos (e outros touristas) não perdíamos a oportunidade de tirar muita foto. O clima quase não melhorou e a gente desceu até o ônibus para ter o jantar. Para o último evento da noite, nos fomos para a Praia de Copacabana para comprar muito souvenirs do Rio. Ainda que o clima não foi o melhor, nos curtimos o dia e tevimos um tempo bom todos juntos especialmente quando o Cristo dejava ver sua cara.

21º dia - Rio de Janeiro (25/01/2018)

Today we woke up in our apartments in Rio de Janeiro. We made breakfast and got ready for the day. We started by going with the bus to museum of tomorrow (museu do amanhã), it was very interesting and cool. There, we saw a lot of exhibitions about art and the Earth. Afterwards we had freetime and could choose where to eat lunch and then went to Maracanã Stadium. In 2014, the World Cup  was held there. Then we went to the sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar) and took 2 different cable cars to get up there. It had a nice view over Rio de Janeiro and you could see alot of diversity in the city. We were also able to see the statue Christ the Redeemer. For dinner we got pizza and later ended our day at our apartments.

Hoje nós acordamos em nossos apartamentos no Rio de Janeiro. Fizemos café da manhã e nos preparamos para o dia. Começamos não ao Museu do Amanhã, foi muito interessante e legal. Lá, nos vimos muitas exposições sobre arte e a Terra. Depois tivemos tempo livre e escolhemos onde almoçar e aí fomos ao Estádio do Maracanã. Em 2014, a Copa do Mundo aconteceu lá. Depois fomos no Pão de Açúcar e usamos dois bondinhos para subir. Tinha uma ótima vista do Rio de Janeiro e podíamos ver muita diversidade na cidade. Nós também podíamos ver o Cristo Redentor. Para o jantar, nós comemos pizza e depois voltamos aos nossos apartamentos.

20º dia - Vitória / Rio de Janeiro (24/01/2018)

We woke up early to prepare for the bus ride to Rio de Janeiro. Along the way we stopped at a gas station where we got food and drinks. A few hours later we finally arrived to the beautiful city, with the beautiful mountains, and a stunning landscape. Some time after we arrived to the resturant where we ate dinner. After that, we took the bus to the hotel where we would sleep and prepare for tomorrow.

Nós acordamos cedo para nos prepararmos para a viagem ao Rio de Janeiro. Durante o caminho, nos paramos em um posto de gasolina para comer. Depois de algumas horas, finalmente chegamos a linda cidade com belas montanhas e uma vista maravilhosa. Depois de um tempo, fomos para o restaurante jantar. Depois fomos para o hotel, onde dormimos e nos preparamos para o dia seguinte.

19º dia - Vitória (23/01/2018)

Hoje, fomos para a praia na costa de Vitória. Diferente das outras praias que estão bem cheio e tem muito barulho, está praia estava muito vazio e pacífico. A única coisa que eu conseguia escutar era a água, o vento e a Allyson de La Garza ("Mirandaaaaaaaa"). Iriamos fazer mais uma aula de surf, mas as ondas estavam bem fracos e também todo mundo ainda estão machucado de último vez que nos fizemos uma aula de surf. Então só um grupo pequeno fez a aula, um grupo com coragem. Para almoço, fomos para uma casa na praia com lanchonete de burguers. Os donos da casa estavam muito simpáticos e interessantes. Depois, alguém deu uma bola para nós e jogamos futebol na praia. Para mim e para meus amigos quem adoram futebol, essa atividade era uma das maiores atividades nesta viagem (e claro, o time dos americanos e mexicanos ganhou contra os amigos da Europa). Agora é para o resto de minha vida, posso falar que eu joguei futebol no coração do mundo do futebol. Jogando futebol na costa do Brasil é igual um artista descobrindo a arte no Louvre (o melhor museu de arte no mundo), em Paris. Depois da praia, voltamos para o hotel, descansamos e jantamos.

To this day, I still don't know how I managed to get the amount of sun that I got. It may have been because of a fantastic weather at an even more fantastic beach when we were in Vitória. An open beach for all 52 exchange students from respectively 13 different countries, and what was even better, was when we switched from a public beach to a more secluded one at a family's house. They had prepared by making cool stands where they sold wonderful burgers for 20R$ each. We later went to play both football and soccer where most of the boys received injuries in the legs. Brutal games, aren't they?
I don't want to talk much about the dinner restaurant, so I'll end the blog here.

18º dia - Porto Seguro/Vitória (22/01/2018)

We woke up today at 6:00 o'clock in the morning. We left the hotel at 7.30, but the bus stopped working on the way. So we waited 45 minutes at a highway until the bus started working again. We took a stop at a gas station at 12.30, and the bus immediately went to get the problem fixed. We ended up waiting at the tank station until 15.30 were the bus finally arrived. We arrived at the restaurant at 22.30 where we were supposed to arrive at 19.00-20.00. We then went to the hotel afterwards which is placed right beside the beach.

The distance from Porto Seguro to Vitória is 580 km.

Hoje de manhã a gente acordou as 6:00 horas. As 7:30 a gente saiu para Vitória mas o ônibus quebrou no meio da nada. Parou por 45 minutos e depois a gente foi no próximo posto de gasolina. A gente ficou 3 horas nesse posto porque o ônibus foi para o conserto. A gente chegou em Vitória as 22:30 e jantou num restaurante. Depois a jantar a gente foi no hotel que é muito perto da praia. A distância de Porto Seguro para Vitória é 580 km

17º dia - Porto Seguro (21/01/2018)

Today we left the hotel at 9am and went to the historical city of Porto Seguro, the place where the portuguese first saw land in Brasil. We had a Tour Guide to explain the history and importance of some of the landmarks and buildings. The historical part of the city overlooks the ocean and parts of the modern city of Porto Seguro, so the views were amazing. After the tour, We went to a place called Axé moi, were we had until 3:30 to enjoy the beach, food, Henna tattoos and a musical show as well as other stuff.

When we arrived back at the hotel, we had free time until 8pm, so must of us used the time to relax, go to the pool, and later to get ready for the dinner and the party. We had dinner at a restuarant called Bombordo. The party was also Held there so after dinner finished everybody moved to the dance floor. The party went on until 11 pm, and after we went back to the hotel.

Hoje saímos do hotel as 9:00 da manhã e fomos para a cidade histórica de Porto Seguro, o lugar onde os portugueses chegaram pela primeira vez ao Brasil.

Tivemos um guia para explicar pra nós a história e importância de alguns pontos e construções.

A parte histórica da cidade tinha uma vista ao mar e parte da cidade, a vista era impressionante.

Depois do tour, fomos pra um lugar chamada Axe Moi, onde tivemos até as 3:30 para disfrutar da praia, comida, tatuagens de Henna, um show de música e outras coisas.

Quando nós chegamos ao hotel, tivemos tempo livre até as 16:00. A maioria de nós aproveitou o tempo para relaxarmos, ir à piscina e já depois nos arrumamos para o jantar e festa.

O jantar foi num restaurante chamado Bombordo. A festa foi ali mesmo então depois de jantar a gente foi pra pista de dança.

A festa continuou até as 23:00 e depois voltamos ao hotel.

16º dia - Salvador/Porto Seguro (20/01/2018)

Hoje viajamos de Salvador para Porto Seguro. Foi um dia sem intercorrências, mas divertido, porque estávamos todos juntos no ônibus. Nós gostamos das cidades, é claro, mas o ônibus também é bom para sair juntos e recuperar o tempo para dormir. Nunca esqueceremos as paradas de ônibus assustadoras em que paramos enquanto viajamos entre as cidades... Depois de um longo dia de viagem finalmente chegamos a Porto Seguro e fomos jantar. A comida era muito deliciosa. Quando o jantar terminou, fomos ao hotel. O hotel foi muito bom, ofereceu muitas oportunidades para se reunir e conhecer cada vez mais. A piscina parecia super legal e as vistas dos quartos eram surpreendentes porque tudo que você podia ver era o oceano. Tivemos nosso encontro noturno com o grupo onde discutimos questões, planos para o próximo dia e jogamos nosso jogo juntos. No geral, foi apenas um dia relaxante.

Today we traveled from Salvador to Porto Seguro. It was an uneventful, yet fun day because we were all together in the bus. We enjoy the cities of course but the bus is also good for hanging out together and catching up on some sleep. We will never forget the scary bus stops we stop at while traveling in between cities... After a long day of traveling we finally arrived in Porto Seguro and went to dinner. The food was very delicious. Once dinner was over, we went to the hotel. The hotel was very nice, it provided lots of opportunities to hangout together and get to know each other even more. The pool looked super cool and the views from the rooms were amazing because all you could see was the ocean. We had our nightly meeting with the group where we discussed issues, plans for the next day, and played our game together. Overall it was just a relaxing day.

15º dia - Salvador (19/01/2018)

Hoje nós acordamos as 8:00, que para nós é bem tarde. Depois do café da manhã subimos no ônibus para a City Tour de Salvador. Primeiro a gente parou em um lugar com uma vista maravilhosa do mar e de um farol muito bonito. Depois disso fomos para a igreja do Senhor do Bonfim que provavelmente é o lugar mais famoso de Salvador. Essa igreja é muito famosa pelas fitas coloridas que muitas pessoas usam como pulseira que dá sorte. Na frente da igreja tinha muitas dessas fitas na cerca, todo mundo tirou varias fotos e é claro que todos nós compramos muitas dessas fitas. A próxima coisa que nós visitamos foi o Mercado Modelo de Salvador, onde a gente teve tempo para fazer varais compras. Atravessando a rua tinha um elevador que sobe na parte antiga de Salvador. A gente subiu e de lá tinha uma vista maravilhosa. Lá, no bairro de Pelourinho a gente tinha tempo livre para almoçar e conhecer esse bairro maravilhoso, antigo e muito bonito. Depois do almoço nós visitamos a igreja de São Francisco, que também estava bem linda, porque ela estava decorado com muito ouro. Quando a gente estava andando na rua depois disso, tinha muitas bandas que já estavam se preparando para o carnaval. Para nós isso foi a cultura brasileira e muitas pessoas começaram dançar. Chegando na praça, onde Michael Jackson fez o vídeo de “They don’t care about us”  nós fomos liberados para um pouco de tempo livre para conhecer a cidade e fazer compras. As vezes algumas bandas passavam, o que nós achamos muito legal. Também tinha pessoas com tinta branca na rua e quase todo mundo tinha um desenho no braço ou na perna. Na hora de jantar nós fomos para um restaurante que se chamava Coliseu e depois tinha mais tempo livre. A noite a gente foi para um show de danças tradicionais brasileiras e de capoeira lá em Pelourinho. Infelizmente isso já foi a última atividade desse dia maravilhoso, que mostrou muito mais da cultura brasileira para todos nós. Depois do show, nós fomos para o hotel e lá a gente tinha mais tempo livre até a hora de dormir.

Today we woke up at 8 a.m. which was already pretty late for us. After having breakfast we got on the bus for the city tour. The first place we stopped had a beautiful view of the sea and a pretty lighthouse. After that we went to probably the most famous place in Salvador: the church Senhor do Bonfim, a church on a hill where they sell colorful armbands and bracelets, which are supposed bring luck and that are very famous in Brazil. There were a lot of them tied around the fence in front of the church, which gave a beautiful setting for a lot of pictures  and of course all of us bought a lot of these bracelets. Our next stop was the mercadão of Salvador, an inside market, where we had a lot of free time to buy souvenirs and gifts. Right across the street there was an elevator that went up to the old part of the city, called Pelourinho. We had free time for lunch and to get to know this cute part of the city with a lot of colorful buildings. After lunch we all met up again for a tour of the São Francisco church, a church covered completely in gold, which amazed all of us. While we were walking through the streets of Pelourinho, there were a lot of bands with drums and even a theater in the middle of the street. All of us loved the bands who were already getting ready for the upcoming Carnaval and everyone started dancing in the streets. It showed a lot of the Brazilian culture to most of us and everyone loved it. At the place, where Michael Jackson made his music video of “They don’t care about us”, we were released to er to know the city a little better. Every once in a while another band would pass by and there were a lot of people with white paint, who did paintings on our arms and legs. After a while we all met up again for dinner and afterwards we were released again to buy souvenirs or just walk through the streets. After that we went to see a show of traditional Brazilian dances, there in Pelourinho, which ended with a show of Capoeira, a Brazilian fight dance. After that our great day that showed us a lot of the Brazilian culture, already ended. After getting back to the hotel we had a little free time before going to bed.

14º dia - Praia do Forte/Salvador (18/01/2018)

Today we woke up at 4:30 to go from Canindé de São Francisco to Salvador. On the way, we stopped at Praia do Forte for lunch. It was a cute town full of shops, restaurants, an amazing view of the ocean and Tamar, a place to help sea turtles. We got to see a lot of turtles and sharks and touch sting rays. After seeing the turtles, we left for Salvador where we had pasta for dinner at a cute restaurant and then had a talent show. During the talent show people sang, danced typical dances from their countries and had fun.

Hoje a gente acordou a 4:30 de manhã para ir ao Salvador de Canindé de São Francisco. Durante a viagem nos paramos na Praia do Forte para comer o almoço. Era uma cidade muito fofa cheia de lojas, restaurantes, uma vista maravilhosa do mar, e Tamar, um lugar para proteger as tartarugas marinhas. Nós vimos muitas tartarugas, tubarões, e tocamos nas raias. Depois de ter visto as tartarugas, a gente foi embora para Salvador, onde comemos massa no jantar em um restaurante muito fofo. Depois de jantar nos tivemos o show de talentos. Durante o show as pessoas dançaram e cantaram as musicas tradicionais dos países deles e nos divertimos. Durante o show as americanas também fizeram uma dança chamada “The Cotton Eyed Joe” e cantaram o hino nctional dos EUA.

13º dia - Canindé de São Francisco (17/01/2018)

A gente acordo muito cedo pra viajar dia inteiro pra chegar em Canindé de São Francisco, quando a gente chegou fomos pra karrancas, almoçamos lá e depois fizemos um tour pelo rio e nadamos na piscina natural do rio, depois de tudo a gente foi jantar lanches em uma cidade chamada Piranhas, a gente aguardo um pouquinho porque um menino ficou desidratado e depois fomos no hotel porque a gente tinha que acordar cedo.

We woke up really early to travel the whole day tô Canindé de São Francisco, when we got there we went to Karrancas, had lunch and then went on a tour through the river and swam in the natural pool. Later we went to a small city called Piranhas to have dinner. We waited a little because a boy got dehydrated and had to go to the hospital, after that, we went back to the hotel because we had to get up early again.

12º dia - Olinda/Recife (16/01/2018)

Hoje nós acordamos cedo para ir para Olinda e visitar a cidade e Recife; duas cidades muito velhos e com muita história. Em Olinda nós comemos em um restaurante bem legal. Depois nós fizemos um tour da cidade, lá tem muitos igrejas e tem uma dança especial com guardas de chuva. Em um mercado nós finalmente recontramos Pauline e Delma. Depois nós viajamos um pouquinho mais para Recife para ir no terceiro mais grande shopping de America do sul, e tivemos tempo livre para jantar e comprar coisas. Quando nos chegamos no hotel nós já devemos ir dormir porque nós precisamos acordar cedo o próximo dia.

Today we woke up early to travel to Olinda to visit the city and to go to Recife; Two very old and historical cities. In Olinda we ate Lunch in a nice restaurant. There we also made a city tour, where we saw a lot of churches and a special dance with umbrellas. At a market we finally met Pauline and Delma. Then we went to Recife to a shopping mall, the third biggest shopping mall in South America. There we had free time to eat dinner and buy stuff. When we arrived at the hotel we have to go to sleep immediately, because we had to wake up early the next day.
